My dad has always been a car guy.  He owns a ’68 Chevelle SS and next to it sits his pride and joy, a factory spec restored 1969 Camaro Z28 Rally Sport.  Molded sheet metal never looked so pretty as that yellow mass of American muscle sitting on those classic wheels.  Like every other car guy he’s as neurotic about his vehicles as a high school librarian organizing to the Dewey Decimal System.  Of course my dad’s obsession rubbed off on me and that little 1989 Accord he bought me always looked as tidy as it could; albeit never as hot as the ’69 Camaro.

Adam Rung’s father influenced him too, but rather than obsessing over cars, Adam inherited a deep respect for our natural resources.  His father was a professor in forestry management and together his parents owned a custom furniture business specializing in Shaker style.  Today Adam Rung Woodworks intentionally chooses materials from the mid-Atlantic region and uses mainly cherry, maple, walnut, and oak.  Over the duration of his career he’s seen a general decline in wood quality due to irresponsible deforestation, which is why he uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) lumber and has become increasingly conservative with bits and pieces.  He avoids discarding any scraps and instead reserves them for accent insets and accessory components.

Adam’s foundation was laid in the natural beauty of Shaker style, but his pieces have also been inspired by local craftsmen Wharton Esherick and George Nakashima as well as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, and Arts & Crafts styles.  He’s acquired his own technique and produces unique furniture and beautiful cabinetry that appears exotic despite its regional origins.  Adam Rung Woodworks was founded on the conservationist values of his family and the woodworking skills he acquired apprenticing in his parent’s shop.
